Termites. . .

I finally gave in and have started a blog. I can't promise consistency or quality. . . after all I am only a student and most posts will probably be written when I should be doing homework and am looking for ways to avoid doing it (if mom reads this I am done with all my homework for today). Anyway, here it goes:
I'm back in Hawaii and happy that I am. However, if you've ever been a full-time student at BYU-Hawaii you know that the atmosphere on campus is a little different during spring and summer terms. This is when the university gets overrun with termites.
These are not your average wood-eating insects. In fact, they are not even insects. They are students that come to the school only for spring and/or summer terms. They come to "experience" Hawaii. They are the ones that give the rest of us Haole's a bad name.
Termites are only here for 1-1/2 to 2 months and come with a to-do list of everything they must do when they are here. Many of them are easy targets for people on the rebound from a break-up as making-out with someone in Hawaii happens to be on their list of things to do (check off two items if you make-out on the beach; three if you make-out with a Polynesian).
Perhaps it wouldn't be so annoying if they didn't look at their time spent here as one big vacation. However since they do, they tend to expect everyone to cater to them. They don't understand why the rest of us can't always go play (in case you're curious why we can't it comes down to 1. Money and 2. The rest of us are out here to get an education. Living in Hawaii just happens to be an amazing perk). They also get this attitude that the University here is cake compared to other schools. If I were taking classes like hula and surfing I bet I'd also think the same thing. As far as the honor code goes, most just pretend like it doesn't exist.
Anyway I didn't realize I felt such animosity towards termites until I had a couple of experiences this past week. The first occurred as I was buying books for my classes when the bookstore cashier asked me if I was just out here for spring. I can understand why he might have asked that since I'm about as white as a blizzard but, I'll be honest, I was offended a little bit.
Then today there was a group of kids standing around OUTSIDE the library talking. I looked over at them and thought, "Definite termites." That may sound rude but they displayed all the physical signs: all but one of the girls sported bleach blonde hair and all of them were wearing standard issue bermuda shorts with perfectly matched T-shirts.
As for other excitement. . . I found out today that I'm an illegal worker. I'd tell you more but mom found out and said I can't jeopardize my employer by posting more about that on here. If you want to learn more you'll have to contact me personally.

Yeah! Thanks for starting a blog. Consistency isn't a requirement, just a perk. For the other readers, I am the one that said Roo falls off the face of the earth when she goes to Hawaii.
By the way, I love you no matter how legal you are.

I want to be a termite! Right down to the bleach-blond hair, too! Perhaps a baby on the hip doesn't fit the typical mold, but I could outfit her with matching bermuda shorts and tee!

Well, I guess you can look for a positive in the termites. You could use their willingness to "have fun" and try and get some dates out of them, you know, THEY pay. I really don't feel too bad for you having all those termites. . . sheeesh, you are in Hawaii!!!!!
